About Waterford

Waterford is a medieval city situated in a beautiful coastal county (County Waterford). The city, the oldest in Ireland, was founded in the ninth century on the banks of a great surging river, the River Suir. Danes and Vikings swept up the river in their longboats, at first to plunder, then to trade, and finally to settle on its banks and intermarry with the native Irish. For many years in the middle ages it was the port of entry for invading armies and their kings, many of whom resided in the walled city for a considerable period, including King Henry II and King John all of whom added fortifications which would eventually halt even the voracious army of Cromwell.

Today just part of the walls and a few of the old fortified towers remain but Waterford City is more vibrant and exciting than ever. Wars and sieges are long gone but music, art, theatre and haute cuisine hold sway. You can listen to exquisite classical music in the unique 18th century Georgian cathedral, or rock the night away in state of the art night clubs. You can dine in panelled splendour in a castle, or choose from award-winning menus in the multi-national restaurants near the flowing river. A Viking would probably feel at home where, in 2005, hundreds of ships gathered for the Tall Ships Race. The county, in size about 700 square miles, has mountains to climb, hills to walk, long beaches to lie on, forests to explore and rivers to fish, including the awesome Blackwater. And if that does not excite you find out where the hurlers are playing, the Ballygunner men, the Mount Sion men, the Gaultier men or any one of a dozen enthusiastic clubs about the county. And after the match you can join them and quench your thirst with a pint of stout or ale, brewed of course, in this fairest of counties, the home place of Ballylough Books.
