About the Tall Ships Race DVD

Tall Ships Race Waterford DVDOn the 6-9th of July 2005, Waterford City played host to one of the greatest events ever experienced in it's long maritime history, the Tall Ships Race. In this production I have tried to capture some of the special moments that took place in our city those three very memorable days. This DVD takes the format of a slowly moving slide show, which will guide you from image to image, that fade on and off your screen. With additional background music to capture the atmosphere of the occasion. In all some 90 ships visited our port with ships and crew members from countries such as Bulgaria, India, Russia, Poland, Germany, Ireland, England, Finland, Portugal, Latvia, Lithuania, Belgium, Spain, the Netherlands, Oman, Uruguay, the United States and Norway. The Tall Ships series is organised by Sail Training International for young people during the summer months. The trainees, over 5000 of them during this year's series are from more than 30 countries from every continent. Waterford also had the unique honour of being the first Irish city to host the start of the Tall Ships Race - Paddy Dwan

Tall Ships Race DVD Review (Munster Express, Dec 2005)

Paddy Dwan, the popular photographer, has brought out a most attractive and artistic DVD - Tall Ships 2005 - A Photographic Journey. It's modern style of still images of ships and scenes slowly merging into other ships and image creates and artwork that advances the usual photographic gallery show into a quality DVD.

Expertly engineered by Ken Coleman with additional photography by Alex Browne, Mark Doherty and Hannah Cunningham; it has a classical guitar backing track that creates a pleasant cushion as the fine images fade and merge into view. The Tall Ships event was such as stunning occasion and the highlight of 2005 and Dwan captures the wonder and excitement so well. Early shots show the blank wharfs with preparations in progress. Gradually a few masts appear and image after image pulls back to see lots of tall-mastered vessels and more and more people coming to view them.

The images are hypnotic and well chosen as four fays unfold with colour and wonder. Gaily dressed crews paraded down through town and the firework display has a surreal duality in still and overlaid images.

The leave-taking was poignant and effective as the quays returned to their lonely isolation and the tall ships faded into a mist of memory and recollection.

Paddy Dwan captures these moods so well in a DVD to cherish.
