Gunner's plan backfires: Mount Sion 2-13 Ballygunner 0-12
Ballygunner's plan to bring Mount Sion to Fraher field for the 2006 county final backfires...Not the greatest spectacle of a game... Mount Sion scored two early goals thanks to a cool headed goal from Sean Ryan and a lovely flick on from Michael White from a precision pass from Eoin Kelly.
After around 15 minutes mount sion were still 2 goals to 0 when maloney scored two points to bring the gunners into the game...
Ken Mcgrath scored a few lovely points as did his brother Eoin who deservedly got man of the match.
By the end of the first half Ballygunner narrowed the gap to three points.
GAME ON SECOND HALF!
However, mount sion regained their lead quickly with early points from Eoin McGrath and Eoin Kelly and they never looked back. In the end they were clear 7 point winners.
The battle between hartley and mcgrath was fierce as expected with neither gaining any signifcant advantage over each other (including the few schmozzles)
Barry Mullane from Ballygunner played well and scored some nice points (one or two could have been goals), perhaps a prospect for the Waterford team, but was taken off before the end which perplexed the crowd.
The mount sion defence were very strong today, Tony Browne played well as usual as did young stafford and christopher ryan (surely prospects for the Waterford defence). Iggy was solid in goals too.
The gunner's defence was also class with names with Hartley, Hutchinson, Johnny Kearney, Kirwan and Patrick Haran made some good saves (made some excellent saves against Lismore the previosu week also).
Both teams were very evenly matched and without the 2 goals it would have been a much different affair.
All in all an impressive display from Mount Sion, Ballygunner got to within 3 points but the 2 early goals were just too much in the end. A special day for Eoin McGrath as captain as not only did his 3 brothers play today (Roy, Ken and Pat), not only did he hold aloft the cup on behalf of Mount Sion, and not only did he get man of the match but now he will captain Waterford in their quest for munster and all-ireland club glorly AND he will lead Waterford's 2007 quest for Liam McCarthy.
Best of luck to him, if he has surpasses his 2006 performances he will top it all off with an all star.
Credit is also due to Patsy Fanning who made some very good positional moves during the match e.g. when Barry Mullane was on Cleere he was just too tall for cleere to compete so he switched Cleere... this happened early and was one of many other good decisions.
Well done Patsy, Eoin and Mount Sion!!!
I hope now everyone gets behind Mount Sion in the club championship as if we win club glory it is a great honour for all Waterford clubs as Mount Sion would not be as good as they are without the fierce competition about right now. I doubt they will face a defence better than the gunners or stradbally for the rest of the year. Read More → ^ TOP
Waterford GAA Stadiums found Wanting!
Dear Editor,I am writing to you about my disappointment in the GAA county ground(s) in Waterford. If the county board continue to insist on playing matches in the worst months of the year then they should invest in weather proofing stands and seating infrastructure around county pitches to stop deterring supporters from attending.
Last week at the county final in Fraher field (and the semi-finals two weeks previous), many in attendance went home with green stripes on their wet posteriors and lower backs due to excessive moss and other fungi growing on the damp exposed timber stand seats. Obviously, the stand does not cater for larger crowds attending big games.

Justin other year
TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:Justin has been named as manager for Waterford once again. I will fully support Waterford again in 2007, however some of the members of upthedeise.com have some unanswered questions that would like to ask Justin and the county board before we fully endorse the reappointment:

If we make up our mind what we are going to make of our lives, then work hard toward that goal, we never lose!
The fortieth president of the United States, Ronald Reagan once said, "My philosophy of life is that if we make up our mind what we are going to make of our lives, then work hard toward that goal, we never lose - somehow we win out." It is a quote that oft times resonates around lecture halls filled with wouldbe politicos, board rooms filled with wouldbe CEO's, and training grounds of would be champions. And now more than ever it is applicable to every Waterford player who walks onto Croke Park on Sunday. For every member of the panel, selectors and back-room staff, hurling is life, and the one goal since any of them have picked up a hurley is to win an All-Ireland with Waterford. They all believe in their goal, but so do the opposition it is now a question of who wants it more, and for me there can be only one winner now and that is Waterford. They have worked hard for this, they are chipping away at the wall for the last 8 years and now it time to break on through.Read More → ^ TOP
