If you are a Lord of the Rings fan or just appreciate a lovely walk in a magical setting you simply must visit the Ballysaggartmore Towers in Co. Waterford.  This is Waterford's and Ireland's best kept secret and is one example of the magnificient beauty at the fingertips of those residing in the most amazingly beautiful county in Ireland, Co. Waterford.

Towers Gates of Grandeur Co. Waterford

The magical towers at Ballysaggartmore provide a fairy tale setting which does not reflect the sad period in Irish History where extravagance and starvation lived side by side.

The Gates of Grandeur

Built in 1850 Arthur Kiely-Ussher for his wife, the extravagent fairytale gates were the only part of the castle to be built as money ran out soon after they were built and they resided in a house on the grounds (since demolished)

How to get there

At the bridge in Lismore there is a right turn, keep going for about 2 miles and on your right there is a parking area.  It is very easy to find and is reasoably well sign posted

The Towers Loop Walk

When you get to Towers you are presented with a forest walk with 2 possible paths, left and right.  There is an information sheet which recomments that you go right, however, I prefer going the left route. It is about a 10-15 minute walk to the gates through the most beautiful forest and you won't believe your eyes when you get there. Going the recommended route means you will be tired visiting the entrance gate because of the very steep hill.  If you come back down the right hand route you are then presented with the entrance gates.  I cannot stress how beautiful this is, it is haunting as it simply looks like it should not be there.  It feels like a set from a movie.  I has a picnic area and seats throughout the walk and is suitable for mothers with buggies.

Look around when you are there as there are other surprises for explorers.  Find out more on the upthedeise.com waterford message boards
